The Adventure Begins: Delhi to Chandigarh
Waking up to endless snow-capped peaks in Ladakh feels like stepping into a surreal dream. I was fortunate to embark on one such epic road trip, an expedition that etched memories for a lifetime.
The journey began in Delhi, where we flagged off a convoy of about 15 cars, setting the stage for an adventure like no other. Our first halt was Chandigarh, but reaching there was a challenge of its own. With roadblocks and diversions—a reality of August 2021 that many might recall—we found ourselves navigating through a maze. It was late at night when we finally reached Chandigarh, too exhausted to soak in much of the city’s charm.
Manali Mornings: Coffee & Peaks
The next morning brought another test of endurance as we headed toward Manali. The drive stretched into the wee hours, and we rolled into Manali at 3 AM, weary but determined. The expedition was already proving unpredictable, throwing surprises at every turn. Yet, as dawn broke, I was greeted by my first sight of snow-capped peaks. That view, paired with a steaming cup of coffee, was a balm for the soul and a reminder of why road trips to the mountains are worth every struggle.
Barbecues Under the Stars: Manali to Jispa
Leaving Manali behind, we pushed onward to Jispa, a quaint valley en route to Ladakh. Unlike the previous days, we reached Jispa relatively early, allowing us to unwind and soak in the serenity of this remote hamlet. That evening, we gathered under a glittering canopy of stars, sharing stories over a barbecue. The crisp mountain air and camaraderie of fellow travellers made for an unforgettable night.
Sarchu: The Land of Extremes
The drive from Jispa to Sarchu was exhilarating, with snow-capped peaks edging ever closer. At Sarchu, the landscape transformed into an otherworldly no-man’s land—a place extraordinary yet challenging. The altitude took its toll on some, with AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) creeping in. For others, the bone-chilling winds of the high-altitude plains tested their endurance. Despite the hardships, Sarchu left a lasting impression with its raw beauty and vast emptiness.
The Long Road to Leh
The following day, we embarked on the long journey to Leh. The route took us across iconic mountain passes like Pang and through the expansive More Plains, where I experienced the thrill of clocking speeds over 140 km/h at 15,000 feet. The stark beauty of the plains, surrounded by towering peaks, was a sight to behold. As evening fell, we arrived in Leh, greeted by the golden glow of the setting sun against snow-draped mountains—a moment of sheer magic.
Exploring Leh: From River Rafting to Khardung La
Leh offered a mix of adventure and reflection. One morning, we braved the icy waters of the Zanskar River for a thrilling river rafting experience. In the evening, we paid homage at the Army War Memorial and Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, honouring the region’s rich history and spiritual significance.
The next day was marked by a drive to Khardung La, then considered the highest motorable pass in the world at 18,000 feet. Standing atop this marvel, surrounded by towering peaks, was humbling. I even did a handstand there!!
Descending into Nubra Valley, the landscape shifted dramatically from snow-covered mountains to sprawling sand dunes. At Hunder, I let loose on ATVs, racing across the dunes in a burst of adrenaline.
Pangong Tso: The Jewel of Ladakh
From Nubra, we headed to the ethereal Pangong Tso. The shimmering lake, with its ever-changing shades of blue, left us all spellbound. As night fell, the sky lit up with countless stars, creating a scene that felt like pure magic. Morning at Pangong was equally enchanting, with the first rays of sunlight painting the lake in hues of gold and turquoise.
The Call of Ladakh
All too soon, we found ourselves back in Leh, and before we knew it, the journey had come to an end. Ladakh is not just a destination; it’s an emotion, a mystical land that leaves you humbled by its sheer grandeur. The towering peaks, the stark yet stunning landscapes, and the icy-blue lakes teach you to pause, breathe, and marvel at nature’s wonders.
Driving across high mountain passes and navigating the challenges of this rugged terrain is not for the faint of heart. Yet, it is an experience that everyone should embrace at least once in their lifetime. Ladakh will call me back someday—I’m sure of it. Until then, the memories of this epic journey will keep the mountains alive in my heart.
